National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

"Aerosol Optical Thickness" is the degree to which aerosols prevent the transmission of light in the atmoshpere. An aerosol optical thickness of less than 0.1 indicates a crystal clear sky with maximum visibility, whereas a value of 4 indicates the presence of aerosols so dense that people would have difficulty seeing the Sun, even at mid-day!

The NOAA.gove website is so full of information that it's difficult to find the satellite views you want.

The two links below can get you to the view of the atmosphere over Washington DC and over the West coast.
Play around with the links and see if you can understand what the different views are showing.
I'm trying to learn as well.  As I get more informed, I'll share with you.
